For years Phil Simms was criticized for underperforming while being surrounded by a playoff worthy team. In the 1985-1986 season they were knocked out of the playoffs by the legendary ‘86 Chicago Bears. The ‘86-87 season was the defining season for the New York Giants franchise who hadn't been a true championship contender since the days of Y.A. Tittle.
Steamrolling through the regular season 14-2 and through the playoffs eventually finding them in their first ever Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos lead by the now Hall of Fame Quarterback John Elway. Thanks to arguably the Giants best ever defense with Carl Banks, Harry Carson, and lead by Lawrence Taylor (LT) they found themselves down only one point at halftime. In the second half Phil Simms lead the team to a 39-21 victory, earning himself the award of Super Bowl XXI MVP.
