Reiganbashi Bridge is one of five bridges across the Kamejima River (Reiganbashi Bridge, Shin-Kamejimabashi Bridge, Kamejimabashi Bridge, Takabashi Bridge, and Minami-Takabashi Bridge). The name of the bridge comes from the fact that the Reiganji Temple was built in the present Chuo Ward Shinkawa in 1624, and the Shinkawa area was called Reiganjima Island. Besides, Reiganji Temple was destroyed by the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657 and moved to Fukagawa.
The first erection of the Reiganbashi Bridge is unknown. The current Reiganbashi Bridge was rebuilt in March 1985. In the upper stream of the Kamejima River there is the Nihonbashi Floodgate (completed in 1971) at the branch point with the Nihonbashi River. At the confluence with the downstream Sumida River, there is the Kamejima River Floodgate (completed in 1968). At the time of the storm surge, these two floodgates can be closed to function as a tide bank to prevent flooding due to river backflow.

霊岸橋は、亀島川に架かる5つの橋（霊岸橋、新亀島橋、亀島橋、高橋、南高橋）の1つです。橋名は、寛永元年（1624年）に現在の中央区新川に霊巌寺という寺が建立され、新川一帯が霊岸島と呼ばれていたことに由来します。なお、霊巌寺は、明暦3年（1657年）の明暦の大火により焼失し、深川に移転しています。
霊岸橋の初架は不明です。現在の霊岸橋は、昭和60年（1985年）3月に改架されました。亀島川の上流には、日本橋川との分岐点に日本橋水門（1971年完成）があります。下流の隅田川との合流点には亀島川水門（1968年完成）があり、高潮発生時には川の逆流による洪水を防ぐため、これらの2つの水門を閉鎖して防潮堤として機能させることができます。
