Geocache Description:

THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE

The song The Beautiful People by the rock band Marilyn Manson was written by Brian Warner (whose stage name is also Marilyn Manson). The song was inspired by a 1960s book of the same name which details the jet-setting life style of some of the beautiful elite of the time. The song plays with the dichotomy of our culture of beauty and the ugliness that comes through when you scratch our society's surface.

Marilyn Manson's music and persona often revolts against our society's culture of beauty that is taken for granted by many. For example, the name of each original band member (then known as Marilyn Manson & The Spooky Kids) was created by combining the first name of a sex symbol and the last name of a serial killer - "Marilyn Manson" is taken from Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. Other members of Marilyn Manson have included Daisy Berkowitz, Zsa Zsa Speck, Madonna Wayne Gacy and Olivia Newton Bundy.

Another group of beautiful people are close by the posted coordinates. This cache is located just outside a Kings Park Psychiatric Center burial site created in the 1920s or early 1930s known as Indian Head Cemetery. If you go to the fence gate, you will be looking at the final resting place of many former psychiatric patients and you may be able to see a plaque which provides "This plaque is placed in memory of the thousands who are buried here. They lived with severe illness. May they rest in peace."

The psychiatric center's original cemetery was established around 1890 and was located on the grounds that are currently Kings Park High School on 25A. Before construction of the High School started, the graves located at the original cemetery were moved to Indian Head Cemetery. Unfortunately, some where carelessly left behind and construction workers sometimes found bodies while building the school. The movement of a large amount of dead led to rumors of mass graves of psychiatric patients. According to the author of Kings Park Psychiatric Center: A Journey Through History, that is exactly what Indian Head Cemetery is considering so many bodies were interred at once.

DIRECTIONS & DETAILS: Parking available on the street. Do not try to access the burial ground and please be respectful of this location and its neighbors. You may need tweezers or a pin to retrieve the log. Please be careful not to bend anything when you put everything back in the cache holder. Thanks!
