SECADORES DE TABACO DA LAGOA

A produção de tabaco teve, em S. Miguel, um grande incremento no século XIX na zona oriental do concelho da Ribeira Grande, onde se encontra a Maia, mas actualmente está limitada, nesta localidade, a pequenas plantações para consumo próprio. Na freguesia da Maia existe um Museu relativo ao Tabaco. No arquipélago dos Açores existem actualmente duas fábricas de tabaco, ambas em S. Miguel.
Todavia, ainda hoje, é possível observar a “secagem” das folhas de tabaco, nos respectivos secadores de tabaco existentes no concelho de Lagoa, mormente na antiga estrada regional que liga a cidade de Lagoa à Vila de Água de Pau.
As zonas de produção totalizam cerca de 39 hectares, distribuídos pelos concelhos de Ponta Delgada (17,4), Lagoa (11,3) e Ribeira Grande (9,4).
Os últimos dados oficiais, relativos a 2007, indicam que a produção de tabaco nos Açores atingiu 118 toneladas naquele ano. A cultura do tabaco no arquipélago começou em 1820, mas a autorização oficial de produção apenas surgiu em 1864.

Tobacco production had a large increase in S. Miguel in the 19th century in the eastern part of the Ribeira Grande county, where Maia is located, but is currently limited to small plantations for its own consumption. In the parish of Maia there is a Museum related to Tobacco. In the archipelago of the Azores there are currently two tobacco factories, both in S. Miguel.
However, it is still possible to observe the "drying" of tobacco leaves in the respective tobacco dryers in the municipality of Lagoa, especially on the old regional road linking the city of Lagoa to the village of Água de Pau.
The production zones total about 39 hectares, distributed in the municipalities of Ponta Delgada (17.4), Lagoa (11.3) and Ribeira Grande (9.4).
The latest official figures for 2007 indicate that tobacco production in the Azores reached 118 tonnes in that year. The tobacco culture in the archipelago began in 1820, but the official authorization of production only arose in 1864.
