The Tokachi Trains series of geocaches have been hidden to commemorate steam trains...because steam trains are awesome!
十勝鉄道は、砂糖の原料となる甜菜の輸送を目的に1920年北海道製糖(株)の専用として開通しました。1923年から旅客輸送も始まり、旧川西村を中心とした山麓地帯で働く人々の足として十勝開拓史上大きな役割を果たしました。また、十勝鉄道は「トテッポ」と呼ばれ多くの人々から親しまれていました。しかし、時代とともに自動車輸送が中心となり1959年営業を停止しました。
The Tokachi Railroad opened in 1920 exclusively for the use of the Hokkaido Sugar Corporation to transport the beets which were to be turned into sugar. In 1923 the railroad also began transporting passengers, and played an important role in the development of Tokachi by carrying workers to and fro between the foot of the mountains (for timber felling? I don't really know...) and old Kawanishi village. The Tokachi railroad was fondly known as 'Toteppo' to many people; but the age of rail transport was coming to a close and road transport was taking over, so operations were suspended in 1959.
