With the opening of the New Central Library, Calgary also gets itās two newest public art installations, both designed by Christian Moeller. Ā TRIO involves three whimsical figures standing as sentinels outside either side of the main entrance. Inside, FISH is a mural made of 11,000 books that greets users of the large third floor atrium.
Over the course of a weekend two months prior to the opening of the library, I had the opportunity to participate as part of a small group of volunteers in the installation of this mural. Ā Starting with empty shelves and more than a dozen palettes of boxes containing the books, our team sorted and shelved the books according to the design of the mural.
FISH was made using custom made linen bound books numbered according to their color and drawn from a palette of 12 colors.
The mural was constructed in 40 book segments that were presorted into crates and then placed on 19 rows of shelves that covered a 3m by 15m area.
While some volunteers sorted books, it was my role to shelve them. Ā Over the course of two long days, FISH slowly revealed itself and began peeking out into the atrium.
It was gratifying to see this beautiful mural come together and Iām appreciative that the library allowed some of the public to participate in its installation. Ā As a library lover, I know Iāll be spending some quality time sitting beneath this mural for years to come.
