Geocache Description:

BWTG - November 2018

Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 6:30am - 7:30am.

What's Special on today?

Events

1777 – American Revolutionary War: After 16 months of debate the Continental Congress approves the Articles of Confederation.
1791 – The first U.S. Catholic college, Georgetown University, opens its doors.
1806 – Pike expedition: Lieutenant Zebulon Pike sees a distant mountain peak while near the Colorado foothills of the Rocky Mountains. He and his party attempted to climb the mountain but were turned back after they ran out of food and by waist deep snow. The mountain was later named Pikes Peak in his honor. Now you can drive up, or better yet take a train (‘cause Trains are Cool!) or walk to the top and back to get a few geocaches along the Barr Trail (that’s how CoachO and I did it) including Pike Never Made It!
1864 – American Civil War: Union General William Tecumseh Sherman begins Sherman's March to the Sea.
1914 – Harry Turner becomes the first player to die from game-related injuries in the "Ohio League", the direct predecessor to the National Football League.
1926 – The NBC radio network opens with 24 stations.
1939 – In Washington, D.C., US President Franklin D. Roosevelt lays the cornerstone of the Jefferson Memorial.
1942 – World War II: The Battle of Guadalcanal ends in a decisive Allied victory.
1943 – The Holocaust: German SS leader Heinrich Himmler orders that Gypsies are to be put "on the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps". I know pastor Martin Niemöller had poetic thoughts on that.
1966 – Project Gemini: Gemini 12 completes the program's final mission, when it splashes down safely in the Atlantic Ocean.
1971 – Intel releases the world's first commercial single-chip microprocessor, the 4004.
1985 – A research assistant is injured when a package from the Unabomber addressed to a University of Michigan professor explodes.
1990 – Space Shuttle program: Space Shuttle Atlantis launches with flight STS-38.

Birthdays

459 – B'utz Aj Sak Chiik, Mayan king (d. 501)
1738 – William Herschel, German-English astronomer and composer (d. 1822) In March 1781, during his search for double stars, Herschel noticed an object appearing as a disk. Upon further investigation it turned out he had in fact discovered Uranus.
1887 – Georgia O'Keeffe, American painter and educator (d. 1986)
1905 – Mantovani, Italian conductor and composer (d. 1980)

Deaths

1630 – Johannes Kepler, German astronomer and mathematician (b. 1571) He is best known for his laws of planetary motion, and philosophy, and to whom Carl Sagan described as the first astrophysicist. In 2009 NASA launched a Space observatory to discover Earth-size planets orbiting other stars named the Kepler Mission and it detected 2,662 planets before being retired October 30, 2018. Its original mission life was slated for 3.5 years, but continued working. And after 9 years, it ran out of fuel.
1967 – Michael J. Adams, American soldier, pilot, and astronaut (b. 1930) He was the first American space mission fatality, according to the United States definition which is known as the Kármán Line, or 50 miles above mean sea level.

Before he was tried and convicted, he was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department official and as a U.N. official.

Today is ” Great American Smokeout Day ”!

Great American Smokeout Day is today. Let's support everyone who smokes to finally kick the habit!

The goal of this special day is quite obvious: to get people to quit smoking, resulting in fewer health problems, and less cancer and emphysema deaths resulting from smoking and secondary smoke.

Quitting smoking is not an easy task. As an ex-smoker, I know how hard it is to quit smoking. Often (usually), it takes repeated efforts. That's okay, as long as you keep trying until you finally succeed. The health benefits and the prospect of a longer life are crystal clear.

The American Cancer Society created this day back in 1977. They have promoted it annually since then. They encourage all smokers to give up the "butt" today. Join millions of other Americans today and take a big step to a happier, healthier, longer life!

Never quit quitting!
