Vatnedalsdammen er en steinfyllingsdam i Bykle kommune i Setesdal. Den er en av Nord-Europas høyeste dammer og er anlagt i forbindelse med reguleringen til de store kraftanleggene i Otra. Rettighetene til regulering av Vatnedalsvann stammer fra 1912 og i dag er hele dalen neddemmet. Den første dammen ble bygd i tiden fra 1917 til 1919. I 1943 startet arbeidene med å bygge en større reguleringsdam i Vatnedalen. Denne ble fullført i 1947 og magasinet hadde en kapasitet på 142 mill m³. Førti år senere ble det bygd en ny dam med langt større dimensjoner. Denne dammen er 120 meter høy og har et massevolum på 4,2 mill m³. Den er 365 m bred ved foten. I forbindelse med anlegget ble Otras hovedløp lagt i tunnel fra Lislevann til Vatnedalsvann. Damanlegget (hoveddam og sekundærdam) ble åpnet av daværende olje- og energiminister Kåre Kristiansen i 1983. Magasinet har nå en kapasitet på 1150 mill. m³ og har en reguleringshøyde på 140 meter.

SETESDAL

Setesdal betegner dalføret langs Otravassdraget som har sitt utspring lengst nord i Aust-Agder fylke, som ligger i landskapet Agder i landsdelen Sørlandet. Dalen strekker seg fra Evje i sør til Hovden i nord. Riksvei 9, Setesdalsveien, går fra Kristiansand i sør, opp gjennom hele Setesdalen til den møter E134 ved Haukeligrend i Telemark i nord.

Navnet Setesdal ble opprinnelig brukt bare om de to nordligste kommunene i fylket, Bykle og Valle. Området nedenfor ble kalt Otrudal. I neste omgang forskjøv grensen for Setesdal seg sørover til Bygland med Byglandsfjord. Man brukte da begrepene Øvre- og Nedre Setesdal. I dag regner man at hele dalføret fra Bykle til og med kommunene Iveland og Evje og Hornnes hører til Setesdal. Mer enn 50% av fylkets areal tilhører Setesdalskommunene. Området var tidligere en del av distriktet Råbyggelaget i Agder, dengang kystområdene gikk under navnet Agdesiden. Iveland kommune inngår i dag i Kristiansandregionen, som omfatter landsdelshovedstaden Kristiansand med omland.

Distriktet Setesdal omfatter dermed de fire kommunene Valle, Bykle, Bygland og Evje og Hornnes, med 6 876 innbyggere (1. juli 2009) og 4 595 kvadratkilometer.[1] Viktige tettsted i Setesdal er fra sør mot nord Evje, Byglandsfjord, Bygland, Ose, Rysstad, Valle, Bykle og Hovden. Regionsenteret er tettstedet Evje.

VATNESDALSDAMMEN dam is a stone-filled dam in Bykle Municipality Setesdal. It is one of Northern Europe's highest dams, and is built in connection with the regulation of major power plants in the Otra. Setesdal (older name: Sætersdal) is a valley and a traditional district in Aust-Agder County in southern Norway. It consists of the municipalities of Bykle, Valle, Bygland, Iveland, and Evje og Hornnes. The Otra river flows through the valley of Setesdal into the sea near Kristiansand. Setesdal flows from the Hardangervidda plateau in Telemark to the north. The historic Setesdal starts at Evje and extends as far as the farm called Bjåen, at the edge of Telemark county. Øvre (Upper) Setesdal is in the municipality of Bykle. The municipalities of Iveland, Evje & Hornes and Bygland comprise the Nedre (Lower) Setesdal.
