The orchard mason bee, although not well known, has been around North America since the beginning of creation. You will find them in various areas within the lower mainland and Vancouver Island. They can be easily mistaken for a black fly. The tiny black with a blue sheen bee is about 2/3 size of a honey bee. Yet they are excellent pollinators for your back yard. To compare with the well known honeybee, an average honeybee visits 700 blooms in a day, but pollinates only 30 blooms. The Mason bee will visit and pollinate 1600 flowers in one day. Their life cycle is about 4-6 weeks and they are ideal pollinators for fruit trees. (from: http://www.artknapps.ca/creating-a-better-tomorrow-with-mason-bees/)
