Geocache Description:

The above coordinates take you to St Michael and All Angels Catholic Church in Locksbottom. The church was the subject of former Church Micro 4379 (GC4QKND) which has been archived by “jazzyjessups” who has kindly allowed us to resurrect it, albeit with different clues and a new hiding place for the cache.

St Michael and All Angels was built to cater for the increasing housing development in Locksbottom and beyond. Construction commenced in 1961 and was completed in 1964.  The church was designed by Henry Bingham Towner who designed over 25 churches in Southern England.  Towner originally wanted to become a priest, but decided this was not for him and trained to be an architect and had his own practice in Uckfield.

The church is built using load-bearing brickwork laid in English bond, around a steel frame. The brick is generally multi-coloured,  with  darker  brick  used  above  and  below  the  windows,  and  on the corners.  The west façade faces Crofton Road and has a four- storey hexagonal open tower with a large cross which is probably the most striking feature of the building. Beside the tower is a thin vertical stained glass window band which depicts St Michael defeating Satan.  This window, together with the other stained glass windows throughout the church, was designed by Murphy Devitt Studios who were in operation in Dublin between 1960 and 1980.

The church was opened on 1 November 1964 by Cyril Cowderoy who became Archbishop of Southwark in 1965.

To locate the cache you need to consider the following (some information requires a site visit):

A is the fourth number of the year Henry Bingham Towner was born

B is the fourth number of the year Cyril Cowderoy was born

C is the number of blue tiles below the thin vertical stained glass window

D is the fourth number of the year the church had its golden jubilee

E is the penultimate digit of the telephone number on the red alarm boxes on the church

The cache may be found a short walk away at:

N51 22.(A-[B+D])(E-B)(C/C) E000 03.([B-D]+[C/C])([E+D]-B)A
