Thornton Reservoir was originally built in order to supply the City of Leicester with fresh water. Being higher than Leicester, it meant that gravity could be used to distribute the water rather than having to utilise pumping stations. It took around 7 years of planning and construction works to build the reservoir, at a cost of around £80,000. The first piped water arrived in Leicester by around 1854. By 1863, it was decided that another reservoir was required and therefore Cropston Reservoir was constructed and in operation by 1870.
The trout fishery on the site opened in the 1970’s, while the 2.5 mile footpath around the perimeter of the reservoir opened to the public in 1997.
This cache is hidden in the area of the reservoir known as Green Bay
