Geocache Description:


Laurence Oliphant was South African author, traveler, diplomat, and christian mystic. He is best known by his satrical novel Piccadily. Laurence was a member of parliament for Stirling Burghs. He was born in 1829 and died in 1888. Sir Laurence's house is today memorial for the Druz soldiers in Daliyat el-Carmel. Sir Oliphant and wife Alice lived there between 1882 and 1887.

The Oliphants were among the few non-Druze to have a close relationship with the community, and did much to help them. Oliphants assistant at the time was Naphtali Herz Imber, author of the words to Israels national anthem - Hatikva.

The ancient Roman column out front is a memorial to Alice, who died at age 36

The house, the Druze memorial center, which commemorates the forth hudreds druze who have died while serving in the IDF since 1948. The house overlooks Nahal Bustan, Ein Hod, and Biet oren. In 1978, Nasraldin Amal, who was also was member of Knesset asked Begin for the house.
