Geocache Description:

A gorge is a narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it. Gorges are normally a result of erosion and geological uplifting over a period of time.

A gorge is created when rivers or streams flow through mountains or hills until the water is able to erode the rock. The layers of rock found inside of gorges are estimated to be 2 million years old.

Gorges can be found almost anywhere in the world, as long as there are uplifted hills or mountains. Around the world, there are examples of gorges and they are all unique, and represent varying places of where they are found.

Ranney Gorge is exactly what it sounds like a medium sized (stream, river) with water flowing through it.

At Ranney Gorge you can witness whirlpools, swirling bodies of water, created by opposite tides, and features of the shore.

At the Ranney Gorge you can view the steep rocky walls which represent a gorge and you can notice that the tree line is significantly higher in the area. gorges are typically small in size, narrow, and are steep.

Gorges are a result of a channel which has eroded earths crust over millions of years, some gorges are so large they can been seen from space. For this earthcache you will be exploring the area and getting to Ranney Gorge from more of a geological perspective.

Q1. Approximatley how deep is the Ranney Gorge?

Q2. How much taller do you believe the tree line is than the bottom of the gorge?

Q3. Approximatley what way is the whirlpool spinning?
