Tewksbury Trails Multi-Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a 5 part multi-cache. The coordinates above will take you to a grave in the Tewksbury State Hospital Pines Cemetery. The cemetery operated in the late 1800s and early 1900s and contains over 10,000 bodies in a wooded 2 acre site. Because of a lack of complete records some have estimated many more bodies are buried here. The graves include paupers, those with TB and polio, and the insane from the Tewksbury State Hospital. The cemetery has been completely overgrown for many years. Just recently volunteers have started clearing the woods and uncovering the grave markers. The graves are mostly marked with a simple cast iron marker (a cross circled by leaves with a letter and number) although a few have a cross or a gravestone. More information on the cemetery can be found at www.tewksbury.ma.gov. At the coordinates you will find a gravestone. Find the year Mr. Scanlan died on the gravestone. Use the last digit in the year to calculate X and Y for the north (N 42 36.56X) and west coordinates (W 071 12.76Y) as follows. Subtract the last digit from 9 to get X. Subtract the last digit from 4 to get Y. These coordinates will take you to the next waypoint. Take a few minutes visiting the cemetery. The remainder of the locations will take you on Tewksbury town trails outside of the cemetery. Some sections will will take you on a proposed Bay Circuit trail through this part of Tewksbury. You will also come across landing lights on poles for the old Tewksbury airport. This multi-cache requires very little bushwacking and is a good hike for kids and dogs. The round trip will take approximately an hour and cover slightly less than 2 miles of trails. Tweezers may be useful at some point. The cache has room for small SWAG and trackables. I've included several tags and a Kennedy half dollar for the First to Find (FTF). Please be careful of muggles. These trails are well used by hikers, dog walkers, and runners.
