Chester/Chester Station

Chester, and Chester Station are pretty much the same town. there is very little history of either town that can be found. The first settlers of Chester were Henry, Isaac, and Orton Williams in 1936. The first town meeting was held in the home of Harvey Williams in 1839. It was given a post office on January 29, 1842, and closed and transferred elsewhere on February 7, 1870. Ironically it was re-opened February 8, 1870 with the announcement of Chester Station, a station on the Grand Rapids Division of the Michigan Central Railroad. It was first platted as Chester Station by Jesse Betz in 1870, with an addition by George Brenner later the same year. Its Post Office was closed on October 13, 1873, but then restored again on May 7, 1874, to be closed for the final time on October 31, 1913. there is an old sign in town that states a population of 57 for Chester Station. It appears that this little slice of history never really had much of a population and was always teetering on the edge of being a ghost town as judged by the several post office openings and closings.

Cache is small so please bring your own writing utensil. No room for swag. Please replace as found. While Cache can be found during the winter, it is not winter friendly.
