The first bridge over the Wairau River here was built in 1912 and opened in January 1913. It was continually damaged in floods and in 1955 was mostly swept away by a massive flood. A new bridge of concrete and steel girders was needed urgently and in October 1958 the present structure, built at a cost of 335,500 pounds, was opened.
To access the cache there is no need to be on State Highway 6. This is a fast moving section of road so stay off the road and attack from the Newman Road side.
To give a bit of history about the Newman Road name, there was once an apricot orchard where the Hunters vineyard is now located. It was owned by a guy called Rex Newman and was not a commercial orchard, but catered for Pick Your Own clientele only. Eventually the potential profits that could be made from converting to grapes lured Rex into ripping out the fruit trees and developing a vineyard. Once he had done all the hard work, Hunters made him an offer he couldn't refuse and now he is living the dream with an aviation based hobby.
