Forte Verena

Alla fine della salita si arriva finalmente al forte.
Il forte Verena fu costruito dal 1910 al 1914 dallo stato maggiore del Genio militare di Verona, col principale compito di difendere il confine tra lo stato italiano e l'impero austro-ungarico (lungo la linea di confine che attualmente si può collocare tra la provincia di Vicenza e il Trentino). E' situato a 2.019 metri di altitudine sulla sommità dell'omonimo monte Verena. Il forte si trova nel territorio comunale di Roana, e si affaccia con pareti a picco sulla sottostante val d'Assa.
Alle ore 4 del 24 maggio 1915 dal forte Verena partì il primo colpo di cannone da parte italiana sull'Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, con il quale si aprirono di fatto le ostilità tra i l'Italia e l'impero Austro ungarico. Il 12 giugno 1915 il forte fu colpito e distrutto da un proiettile da 305 mm penetrato nella struttura ed esploso al suo interno. Il 22 maggio 1916, durante la Strafexpedition, la posizione fu occupata dalle truppe austro-ungariche in mano alle quali rimase per il resto della guerra. Il suo ruolo strategico si concluse col termine della guerra nel 1918.

Come trovare la cache

Alle coordinate del listing vi troverete di fronte ad un ingresso secondario del forte (vedi figura di seguito). Si tratta più precisamente dell'ingresso al "cofano di gola".

Entrate senza esitare (alla vostra destra troverete una targa che vi darà conferma che siete nel posto giusto!); salite le scale sulla destra; in cima al pianerottolo con la ringhiera girate a sinistra e percorrete il corridoio fino a trovare una apertura piuttosto stretta alla vostra destra (molto stretta...). Entrando vi troverete nella "poterna": si tratta di una corridoio tecnico che veniva utilizzato per raggiungere le mura più esterne del forte; il varco d'accesso era molto spesso cammuffato o nascosto. Per proseguire avrete bisogno di una torcia, perchè il passaggio sotterraneo è lungo una cinquantina di metri ed è completamente buio. Percorretelo tutto facendo una curva a gomito a metà circa del percorso. Arrivati in fondo, lasciate le scale che portano verso l'esterno alla vostra destra, vi troverete finalmente all'interno di un piccolo locale quadrato a cielo aperto che era adibito a deposito munizioni: nell'angolo alla vostra destra, ad un'altezza di circa 1,80 m troverete finalmente quello che state cercando...

Fort Verena

At the end of the walk you finnally reach the fort. Fort Verena was built from 1910 to 1914 by the Military Corps of Verona, with the main task of defending the border between the Italian state and the Austro-Hungarian Empire (along the border line that can currently be placed between the province of Vicenza and Trento). It is located at an altitude of 2,019 meters on the top of the homonymous Mount Verena. The fort is located in the municipal territory of Roana, and overlooks with cliffs overlooking the underlying val d'Assa.
At 4 o'clock on May 24, 1915 from the fort Verena the first Italian cannon shot was launched on the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, with which the hostilities between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire were opened. On 12 June 1915 the fort was hit and destroyed by a 305 mm projectile penetrated into the structure and exploded inside it. On 22 May 1916, during the Strafexpedition, the position was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian troops in the hands to which it remained for the rest of the war. Its strategic role ended with the end of the war in 1918.

How to find this cache

At the given coordinates you will be in front of a secondary entrance to the fort (see picture below). This is more precisely the entry to the "pillbox".

Enter without hesitation (on your right you will find a plaque that will confirm that you are in the right place!); go up the stairs on the right; at the top of the landing with the railing, turn left and walk down the corridor until you find a rather narrow opening to your right (very narrow ...). Entering you will find yourself in the "postern": it is a technical corridor that was used to reach the outer walls of the fort; the access gate was very often camouflaged or hidden. To continue you will need a torch, because the underground passage is about fifty meters long and is completely dark. Follow it all by making a sharp curve about halfway along the route. At the bottom, leave the stairs that lead to the outside on your right, you will finally find yourself inside a small open-air square room that was used as a munitions depot: in the corner on your right, at a height of about 1.80 m you will finally find what you are looking for ...
