Montefoscoli è un piccolo borgo collinare alle cui falde scorrono i torrenti Carfalo, Tosola e Roglio.
L’orgine del paese è probabilmente etrusca, come lasciano intuire alcuni ipogei rinvenuti in epoca recente nelle campagne adiacenti al centro abitato.
Montefoscoli è famoso per i suoi misteri, legati principalmente all’aura arcana che aleggia sulla figura del chirurgo luminare Andrea Vaccà Berlinghieri e sul Tempio a Minerva Medica, da lui fatto erigere appena fuori dal borgo, dove pare che da allora vengano celebrati alcuni riti esoterici.
Sulla sommità del paese, in epoca medievale era presente un castello, di cui oggi possiamo solo intravedere alcuni ruderi, e la Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta, risalente al 1260: all’interno, essa conserva il gruppo ligneo “Annunciazione della Vergine”, opera del Maestro di Montefoscoli, scultore pisano-senese attivo tra la fine del Trecento e gli inizi del Quattrocento; nella parte più bassa del paese, si trova la “chiesina”, ovvero una piccola chiesa del 1630 fatta erigere dal popolo come voto di gratitudine per aver risparmiato gli abitanti di Montefoscoli dalla peste che interessò Firenze e i territori circostanti.
Dal piazzale della chiesa di Santa Maria la vista è mozzafiato, in alcuni giorni di particolare limpidezza è possibile, guardando verso ponente, scorgere anche il mare e la Torre di Pisa. La strada separa la piazza dalle rovine della fattoria ex-Gaslini, storico edificio che ormai da anni versa in stato di abbandono e degrado e che ha ospitato alcune alcune riprese del film di Paolo Virzì “N - Io e Napoleone” (2006).
Se passate da Montefoscoli, vi consiglio vivamente di visitare il Museo della Civiltà Contadina (prenotazione necessaria), un luogo dove si respira un’aria di genuinità riscoprendo gli antichi valori del lavoro nei campi, tanto familiari ai nostri nonni.

Montefoscoli is a small hilltop village whose slopes flow the Carfalo, Tosola and Roglio torrents.
The village's origins are probably Etruscan, as some hypogea discovered in recent times in the countryside adjacent to the town center suggest.
Montefoscoli is famous for its mysteries, mainly linked to the arcane aura that hovers on the figure of the luminary surgeon Andrea Vaccà Berlinghieri and on the "Temple to Minerva Medica", which he built just outside the village where it seems that, since then, some esoteric rites are celebrated.
On the top of the village, in medieval times there was a castle, of which today we can only glimpse some ruins, and the church of Santa Maria Assunta, dating back to 1260: inside, it preserves the wooden group "Annunciation of the Virgin", a work of the Master of Montefoscoli, Pisan-Sienese sculptor active between the end of the fourteenth century and the beginning of the fifteenth century; in the lower part of the village, there is the "chiesina", a small church of 1630 erected by the people as a vow of gratitude for having spared the Montefoscoli inhabitants from the plague that affected Florence and the surrounding territories.
From the square of the church of Santa Maria the view is breathtaking, in some days of particular clarity it is possible, looking towards the west, to see also the sea and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The road separates the square from the ruins of the former Gaslini farm, a historic building that since many years ago is in a state of neglect and decay and that has hosted some shots of the film "Napoleon and Me" (2006), by Paolo Virzì.
If you go to Montefoscoli, I highly recommend visiting the Museum of Peasant Civilization (reservation required), a place where you can breathe an air of genuineness rediscovering the ancient values of work in the fields, so familiar to our grandparents.
