Geocache Description:

The Hawkes Bay Airport has undergone a stunning access redevelopment. Walk to the airport from your Westshore accommodation (or your Ahuriri bus route stop). Bike around the Water Ride or park at the airport and walk back here to enjoy this area now. There are information boards and interesting features along the pathway from Westshore to this hide.

Te Whanganui-a-Ōrotu (The Great Harbour of Ōrotu) Ahuriri Lagoon is a place of significance to ngā hapū o Āhuriri (the subtribes of the Napier area) and is central to their existance and identity. A highly productive and abundant food resource, this area is named after the ancestor Te Ōrotu who was a descendant of the great explorer Māhūtāpoanui. Most recently it was identified by ngā hapū o Āhuriri as a part of their Treaty of Waitangi Settlement after being removed from Māori ownership via the Public Works Act of the Napier Harbour Board in 1939.

You do not need to leave the pathway. BYOP. Enjoy !
