Geocache Description:

Thanks for helping the city of Pickens celebrate our 150th anniversary! Have fun learning about our history!

PICKENS COUNTY MUSEUM (GAOL):

This building was built in 1902 and was the Pickens County gaol (jail) until 1975.  Currently it is the location of the Pickens County Museum of Art and History.  Admission is free!  Tuesday-Friday  10 to 5

Located on the corner of Hwy 178 and Johnson Street, in downtown Pickens, SC. and built in 1902, this wonderful example of Turn of the Century Gothic architecture features crenellated turrets and a copper-colored tin roof.  It is constructed of hand-rolled bricks which gives each brick a beautiful swirl pattern. Many of the windows have bars because this unique building was the old Pickens County "Gaol" (jail) from 1902 until 1975.

Currently, the Pickens County Museum of Art and History is housed in this old Pickens County "Gaol".   In 2006, a 10,000-square-foot expansion was added to house permanent exhibits of information, artifacts and antiquities telling the stories of Pickens County, its preceding territories and the Upcountry in general. Three separate "focus" galleries allow changing exhibitions every eight to 12 weeks. Everyone is invited to come during museum hours and enter for free!!

Outside on the museum grounds one can enjoy the Joe and Maggie Rampey Native Plant Garden.

(Note:  The geocache is hidden east of the museum.)
