Background:
One Wednesday in May, 1978, four groups of jets took off for a military training exercise to test various observational instruments on the planes. One particular plane, the De Havilland U-6A, numbered 8012, flew under the command of Vice Captain Major Liu Chuan Ji (副隊長劉傳集少校) and Captain Chen Gao Cai, (陳高才上尉). Shortly after three o'clock in the afternoon, news started to surface from an aboriginal area in the Nanzhuang Area of Miaoli County (苗栗縣南莊鄉) that there had been a plane crash near the mountain next to Xiangtian Lake (向天湖), with initial reports saying there was one casualty and one person seriously injured. The aboriginal eyewitnesses rushed to the local police to report the crash, who in turn notified the Longtan Control Tower. (龍潭塔台) The Longtan Control Tower (龍潭塔台) attempted to establish radio contact with the De Havilland U-6A plane but after multiple attempts, the Control Tower was unable to make any contact so concluded that the De Havilland U-6A plane had indeed crashed. Immediately afterwards around 6 o'clock that evening, a search and rescue team was formed and dispatched to the mountains to find the plane and save the only survivor—Captain Chen Around 7:30 p.m., the team found a very badly injured Captain Chen (陳高才上尉), whose legs were broken from the plane crash. Captain Chen (陳高才上尉) was carried down the mountain and transferred to a local hospital where he received immediate medical attention. Unfortunately Major Liu (劉傳集少校) died in the crash but with the help of fellow military personnel and the local aboriginals, they took a part of the cloth-like material used for covering the engine of the plane and wrapped his body in it. They then carried his body down the mountain, later transferring him to a funeral home in Taipei.
