This will likely be my final hike of 2018, so I thought, why not invite some friends and some friends I haven't met yet. Oh I know, an event! The Pinnacles Forest is owned by Berea College and the Head Forester ( John ) told me I could have this hike here whenever I wanted, Mahalo. The hike wil begin on your own schedule. The event will be Noon to 12:30 or a little longer at or near the posted co-ordinates. In case it is crowed there ( this is a popular hiking destination ) I will have on bright orange hunting clothes so in case you are one of the friends I haven't met yet, you should be able to find us. The logbook will only be available at the event, so sign in there. A group picture will be taken. You may want to bring your camera as Eagles Nest is an extremely scenic rock outcrop about 600' above the valley floor. Chilren that can hike without too much complaining are welcome ( use your own judgement )Those that complain that walking around the grocery store or a half mile flat trail, will not have a positive experience in the knobs. Pets on leash are welcome. You must pack out what they intend to leave.
I have provided parking and two trailheads. Shortest hike is from the main parking lot ( plenty of room for larger vehicles ). For a nice long hike if you have time, I suggest parking at the main lot, walk West on the paved bike trail ( yes, it is lined with geocaches ) to the West Trailhead and go up from there. The trails are pretty well marked and very SCENIC. Hiking boots or shoes recommended. There are a bunch of geocaches here for your enjoyment before and after the event.
I will offer hot choclate ( Real Hot Choclate made with milk ) to anyone wanting some. I will carry up to 1.5 gallons depending on the number of will attend logs and a camp stove or two with me on the hike. If you like the fake or gas station hot choclate, then bring your own fixin's and I will heat it for you. This is a great spot to have lunch, so plan ahead.
In case of foul weather, please watch for announcements from me as I will likely make this decision the night before. If you have a will attend log, you will get the announcements delivered to your in box. I hate relying on the weatherman but that is the best thing I can do.
I believe it was 2 years ago at a geocaching hike event here, we enjoyed a very heavy snow burst with very large flakes and winds of 20+ at this very location. The weatherman had predicted a mostly clioudy day with highs in the 40's. I don't think the temperature made it above 30˚ that day, but a few of us Hardy Hikers stayed all day.
In case you forget your gps or don't own one, Exit Interstate 75 at Berea, State Route 21 and head East, go thru town following the signs for rt 21. The Pinnacles forest lot will be on your left about 2 miles East of town. You will pass route 1617 about a mile before the lot.,,,,,, Don't forget to read the hint
