Geocache Description:

Attention!! You will need a TOTT to get the correct answers for this cache! Bring some binoculars to get a better view!

This Earth Cache will show you a nice example of the Limestone Rock horrizons in Jefferson City.

About Limestone. Limestone is a Sedimentary Rock that is dominantly composed of the calcium bearing carbonate minerals Calcite and Dolomite. Calcite is chemically calcium carbonate(CaCO3). Dolomite however is calcium magnesium carbonate CaMG(CO3)2

So, why do we care about mining this stuff?

Limestone is used to make many products that are quite important to our way of life. It’s uses include aggregate(AKA “gravel”) that is used in concrete and foundations for structures. It is also very important for gravel roads as it is quite plentiful. It is also commonly used as “aglime” in Whitehorse case the limestone is ground into a fine sand or powder and used as a soil conditioner.

Here you can see all of the various layers of limestone as they have been exposed by the quarrying of the nearby rock company. If you look at the top with your binoculars you should be able to notice some differences between the first limestone layer and the stone below it. As you examine the limestone wall there are slight differences in its appearance.  Most of Missouri’s Limestone was laid down in the Ordovician Period and the various levels have different fossils within them.

Logging requirements: 1 Using your binoculars how many different rock layers can you see in the bluff? 2 About how high do you think the bluff is? 3 Again using your. Binoculars About how tall is the first layer of Limestone?   4 What are two uses for Limestone? 5 What is the dominant color of the Limestone bluff? 6 Although not required it would be great if you could post a picture of the Limestone bluff.
