Geocache Description:

The Royal Hotel (previously known as the Federal Hotel) is the building that you can see across from this cache. The licensee in 1888 was John Fardy. He had previous been the licensee for "Kingsdale" and prior to that had been the licensee for the the other hotel in Peelwood - creatively known as the "Peelwood Hotel".

John Fardy and his wife Florence settled here and had 9 children.

The building was a mixed business with a shop attached to the hotel. Unfortunately, the shop burnt down but the family were able to continue trading out of one of the hotel rooms which had not been affected. John died in 1918 and Florence continued to run the hotel until the license expired in 1925. With the hotel closed, the shop took over the hotel area and supplied all manner of items from groceries to hardware to clothing and footwear. Florence died in 1935. John and Florence's son, Herbert continued to run the store until 1980.

As I placed this cache I tried to imagine the scene of a small town and passing travellers that could support 2 hotels and a store. Very different from today.
