In the 1700s, this corner of King Street to the north and Queen Street to the west could have been considered the very north-west corner of urban Dublin. Behind just two rows of houses, fields would extend northwards, subdivided into small plots. To the west, St Paul's Church stood at the corner of Oxmantown Green which separated the dense urban environment from the Artillery Ground, Royal Square Barracks and the Horse Square. Beyond these mostly fields ran up to and around the Phoenix Park, which existed as a walled park even then. Nowadays it's harder to know where a city truly ends, but it would take you about 2.5 hours walking north west to reach the outer edge of Mulhuddart, which is as good a guess as any!
