Geocache Description:

Dockers’ Steps and Mural

We hope you are enjoying your time in our wonderful city.

There is plentiful free parking near this cache so can be done as a park-and-grab or part of the riverside walk.

You're looking for a disguised micro/small cache.

The Herculaneum (Dockers`) Steps were constructed to provide access for dock workers to the Herculaneum Dock which opened in 1866.  After the dock closed in 1972 the steps fell into disuse but were reopened in 1984 as part of the International Garden Festival celebrations.  The steps continue to provide an important link between the Dingle and waterfront.

Painted in 2008 by Alan Murray, the theme of the mural is Liverpool history and culture, then and now.  Each panel shows a different timeline of Liverpool and how it merges in to the next generation.  The painting shows people arriving in Liverpool looking for work and then goes on to show prosperity and poverty, the overhead railway, shipbuilding, WWII, Toxteth riots, Docker’s strike and a selection of Liverpool characters, famous and not-so famous, who have contributed to Liverpool culture.

This location is a much used cut-through and people can appear out of nowhere, so please be discreet and use care when retrieving and replacing this cache, as it is homemade and not easily replaced.

Enjoy.
