Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell
Di fronte a Porta Nuova, sulla sinistra, in un punto di intenso traffico, ci sono dei giardini senza nome, tant’è che sono chiamati i giardini di Viale Piave. Al loro interno è posto un obelisco che ricorda il generale Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell, un altro personaggio di cui, a parte gli storici, si sa poco o nulla. Anche un palazzo sede dei militari porta il suo nome. Ma vediamo di scoprire qualcosa di più.
Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell nasce a Palermo il 9 novembre 1818 nell’allora Regno delle Due Sicilie. Combatte dapprima i moti siciliani e viene nominato Ministro della Guerra del Regno delle Due Sicilie nel 1860 quindi in piena lotta con i garibaldini. Favorevole ad una Lega Italiana cercò di rimanere sulla difensiva anziché attaccare le truppe garibaldine. Inviso ai sostenitori borbonici perché visto come fautore dell’unità d’Italia, il 5 settembre 1860 parte con la famiglia per la Francia da dove ritornerà il 2 marzo 1861 pochi giorni prima della proclamazione del Regno d’Italia il 17 marzo 1861.
Sebbene anche qui inviso a molti che ritenevano inammissibile che un ex generale e ministro borbonico potesse far parte del regio esercito italiano, venne nominato Comandante della VII Divisione, poi della XIX Divisione e, nel 1866, Comandante della 2^ Divisione del Corpo d’Armata. Con questa, durante la Battaglia di Custoza del 1866 fu l’unico a mantenere la posizione sul Mincio respingendo gli austriaci nei pressi di Monzambano.
Al termine della terza guerra d’indipendenza l’Austria cedette il Veneto all’Italia e il 1° corpo d’armata di Pianell ebbe il compito di occupare la regione.
Sempre nel 1866 venne nominato comandante del dipartimento di Verona e nel 1869 comandante del 2° Corpo dell’Esercito.
La città di Verona intese ricordarlo soprattutto quando nel 1882, al comando delle forze dell’Italia del nord organizzò soldati e mezzi per aiutare la città e la popolazione colpita dalla tremenda alluvione e ciò, anche prima che venisse data l’autorizzazione da Roma. Nel 1887 gli venne conferita la cittadinanza onoraria.
L’obelisco che ora vediamo in questo giardino molto poco frequentato, avrebbe dovuto essere sistemato in un primo tempo nei pressi di Castelvecchio ma poi venne preferito questo luogo più defilato.

In front of Porta Nuova, on the left, in a point of intense traffic, there are some nameless gardens, called the gardens of Viale Piave. Inside there is an obelisk that recalls the general Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell, another character of whom, apart from the historians, little or nothing is known. Even a military headquarters building bears his name. But let's find out more.
Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell was born in Palermo on 9 November 1818 in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. First fights Sicilian motions and is appointed Minister of War of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860, in full struggle with the Garibaldians. Favorable to an Italian League, he tried to stay on the defensive rather than attack the Garibaldi troops. He was not well seen by the Bourbon supporters because he was seen as a supporter of the unification of Italy. On September 5, 1860, with his family he left Italy for France, where he returned on March 2, 1861, a few days before the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy on March 17, 1861.
Although here too many others who considered it inadmissible that a former general and Bourbon minister could be part of the royal Italian army, was appointed Commander of the VII Division, then of the XIX Division and, in 1866 Commander of the 2nd Division of the Army Corps. With this, during the Battle of Custoza in 1866 he was the only one to maintain the position on the Mincio rejecting the Austrians near Monzambano.
At the end of the third war of independence, Austria surrendered the Veneto to Italy and the 1st corps of Pianell had the task of occupying the region.
Also in 1866 he was appointed commander of the department of Verona and in 1869 commander of the 2nd Army Corps.
The city of Verona meant to remember it especially when in 1882, at the command of the forces of northern Italy, organized soldiers and instruments to help the city and the population hit by the terrible flood and that, even before the authorization from Rome was given. In 1887 he was awarded honorary citizenship.
The obelisk that we now see in this very little-visited garden should have been initially set up near Castelvecchio but then this place was preferred.
