Geocache Description:

Here is the second cache of a series of caches describing the Irish Culture. Irish culture is one of my favorite topics and I hope everyone enjoys these little history lessons. I don’t expect everyone to read all of the information but if you see something wrong, please let me know.

This second lesson is about the Irish flag.

FTF gets an…Irish Flag!!!!

Note: Please no pictures giving away the exact location of the cache or what the cache looks like.

Colors – Green, white, and orange

The Irish flag was presented as a gift in 1848 to Thomas Francis Meagher from a small group of French women who were sympathetic of the Irish cause. If wasn’t until 1916, when it was raised above Dublin’s General Post Office, that the tricolor became the national flag. The flag was adopted by the Irish Republic during the Irish War of Independence. It was later given constitutional status under the 1937 Constitution of Ireland and is flown on both sides of the Irish border as the national flag.

The green section of the flag represents Roman Catholics, the orange represents the minority Protestants (they were supporters of William of Orange, who defeated King James II and his predominantly Irish Catholic army), and the white represents a lasting peace and hope for union between the Protestants and Catholics. The flag, as a whole, is intended to symbolize the inclusion and hoped-for union of the people of different traditions on the island of Ireland, which is expressed in the Constitution as the entitlement of every person born in Ireland to be part of the independent Irish nation, regardless of ethnic origin, religion, or political conviction.
