Il Castello
Il Castello di Desenzano del Garda è il monumento che forse meglio di ogni altro caratterizza questa deliziosa cittadina.
Esso è stato realizzato nel secolo XI, probabilmente sui resti di un castrum romano, a difesa dalle invasioni barbariche, senza tuttavia divenire mai una vera e propria fortezza.
Il Castello serviva infatti principalmente da sicuro rifugio per la popolazione in caso di pericoli o attacchi dall’esterno. All’interno della cinta muraria della struttura abitavano famiglie di privati cittadini che, in caso di necessità, dovevano accogliere il resto della popolazione di Desenzano.
Le sue mura racchiudevano un piccolo borgo con le proprie strade, la piazza, la torre campanaria ed una chiesa, dedicata a S. Ambrogio.
Oggi della struttura difensiva originaria rimane il recinto fortificato con le mura merlate e le torri che dominano il centro storico.
Il castello venne adibito a caserma a partire dal 1883 e nel tempo ospitò guarnigioni di fanteria, di bersaglieri ed infine di alpini, fino al 1943.
Dalla sua torre panoramica, visitabile a pagamento insieme ai camminamenti di ronda e al mastio, è possibile godere di una delle più belle viste sul Lago di Garda, mentre panorami altrettanto meravigliosi sono visibili passeggiando lungo le stradine fuori le mura, accessibili gratuitamente.

La zona, specialmente in estate, è molto frequentata pertanto è necessaria la massima discrezione, soprattutto durante le operazioni di ripristino.

The castle
The Castle of Desenzano del Garda is the monument that perhaps better than any other characterises this delightful town.
It was built in the eleventh century, probably on the remains of a Roman castrum, as a defence against barbarian invasions, without ever becoming a real fortress.
The Castle was in fact mainly used as a safe haven for the population in case of dangers or attacks from the outside. Inside the walls of the structure lived families of private citizens who, in case of need, had to accommodate the rest of the population of Desenzano.
Its walls enclosed a small village with its streets, the square, the bell tower and a church, dedicated to S. Ambrogio.
Today the original defensive structure remains the fortified enclosure with crenellated walls and towers that dominate the historic center.
The castle was used as a barracks since 1883 and over time hosted infantry, bersaglieri and finally alpine garrisons, until 1943.
You can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Lake Garda from its panoramic tower, which can be visited at a charge along with the patrol walkways and the keep, while equally astonishing views can be seen strolling along the narrow streets outside the walls, accessible for free.

The area, especially in the summer, is very busy so maximum discretion is needed, especially during the restoration operations.
