Geocache Description:

Here at Clos Crossing is one of the few points providing pedestrian access across the Molonglo River downstream from the Scrivener dam. Interestingly, I have been unable to find the origins of the naming of this crossing, even the 'Molonglo River Reserve- draft reserve management plan 2018' issued by the ACT Govt does not know the origins of the naming, and refers to it as 'historical'. Other historical crossings include Southwells Crossing at Coombs which is named after a landholder at Weetangerra who ran a carting business in the 1860s, Bulga Crossing at Bulga Creek, which referred to the general Yarralumla area, Limestone Crossing at the old Limestone quarry, Llewellyn Crossing, named after Mrs Bobby Llewellyn who established Canberra's first riding school in the 1940s, and Coppins Crossing, named after John Coppin and his wife Catherine Sheedy who lived at Coppins Hut, an excavated historical site on the southern banks of the Molonglo. The newest addition is Butters Bridge, commemorating Sir John Henry Butters. The water passage of Clos Crossing is quite low, so when the river is in flood, vast amounts of fallen timber and debris becomes trapped here, becoming almost a dam that any beaver would be proud of. At the time of placement, all was clear, and white herons, and cormorants could be seen fishing nearby. Please byo pen and replace the cache container as found.
