Geocache Description:

This Church Micro retains the number (10132) of an archived cache because it is based on the same church, but has new questions and a new hiding place.

Sowton is a village and civil parish with a population of 639. In 1976 its parish council merged with Clyst St Mary to form Bishop's Clyst.

The church of St Michael and All Angels, a grade I listed building, was rebuilt in Gothic style in 1844–45 by John Hayward. The original 16th century perpendicular style north arcade was retained. It is a rare example of an early Victorian village church of Tractarian style, one consistent with a form of Anglo-Catholicism called Tractarianism. The building was paid for by the High Church Garrett family of nearby Bishop's Court, and Hayward was commissioned to build the church in ecclesiologically correct Gothic style. The church is built of coursed red sandstone with Beer stone dressing, and has a fine fishscale slate roof.

Walk up to the north west corner of the graveyard and you will come to an enclave with numerous stone crosses. If you continue right up to the corner with two yew hedges you will come to a polished red stone cross, that of Major General John Julius Johnstone.

Major General John Julius Johnstone was born on 2A March BCDE and died on 2 June 1898.

As you walk back towards the church, just before you reach the brick wall you will see on the right of the grave of Sergeant  Maurice Frederick Causley of the Devonshire Regiment. The grave is maintained by the Commonweath War Graves Commission. It is the third grave before the brick wall to your right.

Maurice Frederick Causley died on 1 March 19F1 aged GG years.

The cache will be found a short walk away at N 50° 4D.FBG' W 3° 2(C-G).EDA
