Geocache Description:

The handicraft register at De Sandvigske Samlinger had a program in the beginning of the 1990s, that looked into construction engineering. By pure chance, two employees found a woolen fabric when they examined the roofing of the Trondenes church in 1989. The roof of the Trondenes church is a table roof. Later it is taken with roof tiles, but below the original roof is intact. In the end caps of the roof boards lies the wool fabric in a mixture of clay and tar.

When research showed that the fabric came from a wool sail, the suspense was enormous: could this be the sail of poor quality that Asbjørn Selsbane got from Thorir Sel after he had taken Asbjørn's good sail?? However, the carbon 14 dating ended the speculations. Several datings were made and they gathered around 1390-1400 AD.

The wool fabric was early interpreted to be a sail, and from the cutting of the fabric to the seams, it is clear that it was not rectangular. The Trondenes sail represents the remains of a very old tradition. Based on old knowledge from Shetland, Faroe Islands and coastal Norway the sail was reconstructed by Amy Lightfoot. Two sails were made, one to "Sara Kjerstine" and one to the “Skudelev 3” copy "Sif Ege". The wool was taken from outdoor living sheep, and the further process towards a finished sail was done in the traditional way.
