Geocache Description:

In this area, the chieftain's harbor must have been placed. The remains of a large boathouse is right up from the beach. The length may have been up to 35 meters. This may have been Thorir Hund's boathouse and perhaps Thorir Hund's ship was here. After Snorre's description of the expedition to Bjarmaland, Thorir Hund traveled with a ship and a crew of about 80 men. Several objects have been found in this area that dates back to the Bronze Age, but most findings are from the Iron Age. Among other things, an arrowhead of iron has been found, which is dated back to the Viking Age.

Another thing to make notice of here at Bjarkøy is the burial mounds in Øvergårdsvika. Øvergårdsvika has been used as a burial site in a time frame of more than 1000 years. In these graves several artifacts has been founds. Among other a needle made of bone, a cruciformed bronze buckle, glass beads and a bracelet of silver. In addition to these burial mounds you can also find two boathouse- remains. These boathouses could have housed ships with a length of about 20 meters. The boathouse- remains here in Øvergårdsvika are also put in context with the chieftains seat. Placed like this Thorir Hund would have an opportunity to escape, no matter from what direction the enemies would have come from.
