Geocache Description:

Kveøya is a mountainous island, with a narrow coastal strip, and the island is known for having good arable land. Several surveys of burial mounds and separate discoveries indicate that the island has been an important center from younger Roman times to the Viking Age. Already in 1874 archaeological investigations were carried out on the island. Several graves were investigated, where parts of a skull were found in one of the graves. Over the years, the tombs that were visible in the landscape have been plowed away in favor of arable land.

When the Kveøya connection was to be built in 2008/2009, a surface uncovering of the area was carried out. This excavation was unique, as it was the first major excavation in northern Norway of this type of mechanical surface uncovering with extensive archaeological investigations. The excavation field was 50 meters wide, and was 350 meters long, stretching from the shore up to the settlement. The excavation field was divided into three areas based on the type of cultural monuments that were uncovered. The lower field consisted of overgrown tombs, cooking hobs and fireplaces. The middle field consisted of cleared fields, clearing pits and cultivation layers. The upper field consisted of houses and settlement tracks. There were found 11 remains of graves, and structures after 3 houses, where the longest was up to 23 meters long and 7 meters wide. As well as 6 structures of fireplaces / cooking pits and in 3 shafts traces were found of ards, that were a type of plow.
