This "camel" statue is really a dromedary camel. The actual two humped bactrian camel imported to BC for use on the trail of 98 was an ill fated experiment. Problem with the statue is it is not of the two humped variety bactrain camel which was imported and is mainly a beast of burden, but a one humped dromedary camel which is often used for racing in Arabia. The camel is not suited for our cold, wet climate and the experiment did not work out. Apparently they worked out somewhat in California.
The camels imported into B.C. were from the Gobi Desert. They are not supposed to have snow on their hump!
The artist was aware of the use of the bactrain camel but preferred the dromedary - and who wants to disagree with artistic license.
