[EST] Kuna Tsaari-Venemaal olid Haapsalu ja Pärnu kuurordid ja mudaravilad eliidi seas tugevasti soositud, siis oli Lääne-Eestisse vaja luua kiirem ühendus Peterburi ja Moskvaga. Tsaar Peeter Suur oli 17.-18.sajandil üks olulisemaid Venemaa moderniseerijaid, kes orienteerus tugevalt Lääne-Euroopale. 1723. aastal rajati siia tema ukaasiga uus moodne lennujaam, mis tõi kokku õukonnaliikmeid ja tähtsaid ärimehi. See piirkond sobis väga hästi lennujaamaks veel mitme asjaolu tõttu. Nimelt olid Lääne-Eesti siledad pinnavormid hobusahkadega kergemini tasandatavad, samas ei raskendanud töid ka suured põllukivid, neid leidus napilt vaid ehitustööks, lisaks valdavad läänetuuled olid abiks õhkutõusmisel ja maandumisel tolleaegsetele kohmakatele lennumasinatele. On vähetõenäoline, et Tsaar ise siin maandunud on, aga teada on, et vaatamata ehitusel taga aetud kiirusele ja kvaliteedile, ei hukkunud tööde käigus ühtegi hobust.
Tänapäeval pole lennujaamast palju järel. Aimatavad on ruleerimis- ja lennuraja ääremärgistused ja kivikuhilatena terminalihoonete varemed. Aare asub kunagise lennujuhtimistorni kohas.

Tsar Peter The Great was one of the most important modernizers of Russia in the 17th and 18th centuries, who was heavily orientated towards Western Europe. In 1723, a new, modern airport was created here, bringing together members of the court and important businessmen. This area was well suited to the airport due to several factors. The smooth surface patterns of western Estonia were more easily flattened with horses, the work was not complicated by large rocks, they were barely found only for construction work; besides, the prevailing western winds were helpful in taking off and landing at that time's cumbersome airplanes. It is unlikely that the Tsar himself landed here, but it is known that despite the speed and quality in the construction, no horse was killed during the work.
There are not many flights from the airport today. One can barely notice the margins of taxiways and runways and terminal buildings in ruins. Cache is located at the site of the former air traffic control tower.
