Caches are placed at a location which has usually some special interest, beauty or a favourite place previously visited.
Roadside caches, not always a favourite, and quite commonly used for speed (Cache and Dash (C&D)), normally have limited options.
This series of caches are primarily for the newbies and families with young children. Having to walk too far can be problematic and finding only the basic plastic containers, not too much fun for the wee ones, especially if they contain no goodies?
Please remember to bring TWEEZERS and something to write with. Thanks
LAND SNAILS (A lot of people find me slimy, and a few find me fascinating, however gardener’s hate me!)
Here are a few, hopefully interesting facts:
Some people think that Slugs are snails without a shell, but this is NOT true.
Snails are mainly nocturnal. They are most likely to come out at night, early morning, when cloudy or raining.
Snails are made up of:
A Head with two pairs of tentacles. The two tallest tentacles have eyes at their tips. The shorter pair are used for smelling and feeling their way around as their eyesight is poor. In their mouth they have a ribbon-like tongue that contains thousands of very tiny like “teeth” that they use to eat. Did you know that these creatures are much smarter than they actually look? Yes, they are! Even though they have a very small brain. They are not able to hear and unlike other animals, they cannot make sounds to call out.
A very soft Body which has no bones and with lungs to breathe like we do. The most striking physical feature of snails are their spiral shell that they load on their back. It is a hard structure, which protects their soft body and internal organs. Whenever it senses any danger, it curls its entire body into the shell which is its first and last line of defense. Just as a tree’s age can be worked out by counting the rings formed inside its bark, one can determine a snail’s age by totaling the spiral rings on its shell. Each year, a new spiral ring grows on a snail’s shell, referred to as a whorl.
A Foot. Although snails do not have legs, they can move thanks to a “muscular foot” that, based on wave movements, allows the snail to go from one place to another. Snails move very slowly and use slime to help
To survive winters, many snail species hibernate (sleep).
Snails prefer dark, damp and warm places.
Most Snails are veggies.
Snails are both Boys and Girls together.
Snails can live for 3 – 7 years in the wild, providing that they are not eaten!
