Geocache Description:

Long Compton Extra (LCE) cache series #11

This is the eleventh (last) of some extra caches set around Long Compton, a village on the extreme southern tip of Warwickshire and close to the border with Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, originally placed for a local CacheWalker Twixmas Event. This cache can be done by itself if you are just after Church Micro caches or part of the LCE series.

If you are just after this cache, there is the odd parking space in Malthouse Lane nearly opposite the Lych Gate or at the start of Buryway Lane, south of the Lych Gate, on the same side of the main road.

The LCE cache series:
There is a mixture of cache sizes but in ALL cases, none are hidden in any dry stone walls or caps to be removed from sign posts or gates and no fences should be climbed over.

There is some on street parking along Back Lane N51°59.44 W1°34.745, please do not block driveways.

The route is about 4 miles long on public paths and bridleways but does involve walking along the side the A3400 on a path through the village. The route can be muddy and wet in places depending on the weather. There is plenty of wildlife to keep an eye out for including: deer, foxes, buzzards and kestrals. The complete circular walk, which can be done it either direction, will take approximately 2 hours.

St Peter & St Paul C of E Church:
The thatched Lych Gate, through which you enter the Churchyard, dates from about 1600. It was part of a row of cottages until the 1920s; when they were demolished. The Lych Gate was restored and given to the Church in 1964.

It is believed that St. Augustine preached here in 597 AD, on the site of a 5th century Anglo-Saxon Church. Long Compton is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Cuntone and had a Priest. The present building dates from 13th century and over time has been added to.

The Cache:
Go to the Lych Gate (published co-ordinates)
1) Find the plaque on the gates in memory of David. What Year were the gates erected in? ABCD

Go to the main entrance of the church and you will see white down pipes.
2) What is the date at the top of a pipe? EFGH

Using this formula, calculate the location of the cache, which is just a short distance away:

N51 5C.(E+G)(F/H)(A+G) W001 3(D-A).(C-F)(B-D+E)(D+H)
