Geocache Description:

26 May 2019, 15:00 - 16:30

Come along to join us for fun, laughter and chat on the beautiful Burgh Island for the next event presented by The League of Extraordinary Cachers. There are plenty of different types of cache icons in the vicinity to keep everyone entertained during the day, before attending this event in an extraordinary location. There will be several options to arrive on the island, wait for the tide to be out and walk or take the sea tractor during high tide. The adventerous amongst you may decide to wade or swim to the island.

HIGH TIDE IS APPROXIMATELY 12:03

LOW TIDE IS APPROXIMATELY 17:58

When: Sunday 26th May 2019, 15:00-16:30, and we shall meet at the summit of Burgh Island close to the remains of St Michael's Chapel.

Burgh Island is closely linked to the crime novelist Agatha Christie, as it inspired the settings for both novels 'And Then There Were None' and the Hercule Poirot mystery 'Evil Under the Sun'. The 2001 TV adaptation of Evil Under The Sun used the island as a filming location.

Burgh Island is a tidal island on the coast of South Devon near the small seaside village of Bigbury-on-Sea. There are several buildings on the island, the largest being the Art Deco hotel. The other buildings are three private houses, and a public house.

The island is approximately 250 metres (270 yards) from the mainland at Bigbury-on-Sea and is approachable on foot at low tide. At high tide, the Sea Tractor, which is operated by the hotel, transports pedestrians back and forth (charges apply). The vehicle drives across the beach with its wheels underwater on the sandy bottom while its driver and passengers sit on a platform high above.

The League of Extraordinary Cachers (LEC)

Formed in 2015, the League of Extraordinary Cachers (LEC) are a group of enthusiastic geocachers, who want to enjoy shared geocaching adventures, meet as many geocachers as possible to chat, swap stories, trackables and encourage geocaching, whilst having lots of fun. We champion the use of digital technology including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and use this to promote geocaching worldwide, which we’ve done with great success!
