Welcome to the Taconic Region 2019 Winter Geocaching Series. This is a set of winter-friendly caches.
While strolling the carriage roads, picture Rockwood in Rockefeller’s day. He spared no expense making this property the “perfect country estate,” importing stone masons from Scotland, master wood carvers from Switzerland, gardeners from England and horticulturists from Japan, and employing the best American artists and craftsmen.
He built a three-story coach stable, a farm barn, a hennery, 17 greenhouses, a rose pergola and vegetable garden, and a steel bridge spanning the New York Central Railroad tracks from the estate to a two-story boathouse on the Hudson River. A large herd of Jersey cattle and 100 Southdown sheep kept the lawn trimmed. There were chickens, ducks, pheasants and pigeons in the hennery and four teams of horses in the stalls. Potatoes and hay grew on the property and mushrooms grew in a mushroom cellar.
Along the Lower Trail, take a break among the pines to search for this bison.
