Welcome to the Taconic Winter Geocaching Series!
Wondering about the paths you’re walking along? William Rockefeller took a direct interest in landscape design, engaging the renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. His design included a six-mile system of graceful carriage roads that led family and visitors into the landscape. Their goal was to create a sense of the peacefulness of nature and soothe and restore the spirit.
Hastings block was used on two miles of the drives near the mansion. Hastings block is a paving block constructed of traprock, laid on a 16” stone base. The remaining drives were constructed of compacted crushed stone. The drives were 16 feet wide with an eight-inch crown in the middle. An extensive drainage system was designed to control any water on the roads.
Between the Middle and Upper Trails, you’ll find this cache, which is big enough to hold trade items. We’ve started it off with a trackable.
