The rail line with the Horseshoe Curve was completed in 1854, engineered by J. Edgar Thomson and built by over 450 workers. This rail line reduced the travel time across Pennsylvania from east to west from 20 days by wagon, or the astonishing speed of 4 days by Allegheny Portage Railroad, which was completed only 20 years before, to only 15 hours. As it traverses the Curve, a train travels almost half of a mile of track around and changes 122 feet in elevation. When America entered World War II, the historic Horseshoe Curve became the target of Operation Pastorius, a Nazi plan to blow up a number of targets to cripple key points in the US infrastructure. Luckily the first group of saboteurs that landed on American soil were found out by the US Coast Guard and the mission was scrapped.

This cache is dedicated to, and in memory of all those who have served and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.

This cache is a long walk or an extremely difficult climb. I prefer the climb.

The cache is an amno can in the woods. It is near an awesome overlook. Coordinates to the overlook are in the box (about 400’away). You hiked this far, go check out the view. Enjoy the view of this accomplishment by those who built this man-made wonder. Be sure to wear fluorescent orange as the area leading to this cache is hunted regularly. Enjoy the cache, and please be careful BYOP Please replace exactly as found so everyone can enjoy.

God Bless the U.S.A.
