Infos (01.03.2024) Historical Context:
Constructed by the French in 1779, **Fort Frederick** stands as a testament to the island's storied past. Ironically, it was soon utilized by the British to defend against the very nation that built it, the French. Despite its military purpose, the fort is known for its peaceful history, having never fired a cannon in anger.
Perched atop **Richmond Hill**, just 1¼ miles east of St George’s on the road to St Paul’s, the fort is renowned as the island's best-preserved stronghold. It offers visitors striking panoramic views that are not only a feast for the eyes but also a window into the island's soul.
For those seeking adventure, the fort's tunnels may be accessible if you're fortunate. Remember to bring a torch, as the depths of history are unlit and waiting to be explored.
Current Times:
Today, St. George's, the capital of Grenada, cradles the fort in its embrace. The town cascades down the hillside of an ancient volcano crater and is nestled around a horseshoe-shaped harbor. Its charm lies in its vibrant blend of the past and present, making it a beloved Caribbean tourist destination.
The town is not only a hub of culture and history but also a center of education, housing the esteemed **St. George’s University School of Medicine**. Moreover, it's the gateway to Grenada, with the **Maurice Bishop International Airport** welcoming visitors from around the globe.
Grenada's economy is fragrant with the scent of its main exports: cocoa bean cacao, nutmeg, and mace spice. The island's moderate tropical climate is the perfect cradle for spice production, with nutmegs leading the way, followed by an aromatic array of cocoa, mace, cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger.
