Bald Hill Lookout is located on Lawrence Hargrave Drive at the beginning of the Grand Pacific Drive. Especially on weekends you will find many tourists, motor bike riders and cyclists taking advantage of this scenic and spectacular road.
The views here are outstanding, looking south to Wollongong with great views of the Sea Cliff Bridge. This was built following a landslip which damaged the road and recognised the unstable cliffs. A Shell advertisement featuring a Formula 1 Ferrari driving along the bridge was made a few years ago, showcasing this spectacular bridge to the world.
You are also likely to find hang gliding from the top of the cliffs as this is one of the most popular places to safely launch with great views and steady winds. Visitors are encouraged to watch but need to stay out of the landing area which is marked by cones.
Below on the beach is where Lawrence Hargrave experimented with box kites and engines to power bird like wings beginning in the 1890’s. He is recognised as one of the pioneers of aeronautics. Unfortunately, he was not able to build a light, powerful engine to power his kites before the Wright Brothers made the first powered flight. The knowledge he gained is credited with assisting with early flight
Bald Hill Lookout gets very busy on the weekends and parking may be in short supply, but you will enjoy the friendly atmosphere and views. Take the time to take in the serenity and even have a hot dog or ice cream from the Rex “Buckets” Jackson memorial caravan. (Google that!)
