Footprints in the sand - Runswick Bay Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Cachekeepers: Some caches are destined to pick up FPs galore, others don't. Most of the time you can guess which will be favourites with people. But this one only ever picked up 4 FPs.

It was a reasonably large swag box, set just away from the beach. It wasn't overlooked when rummaging around for it and the area wasn't full of litter. I really liked it. It's a shame it was taken before we could bring it in.

Geocache Description:

This cache is going to be archived on Monday 10th August

We are archiving all of our 100+ Yorkshire caches.
We'd love you to come and find any caches you can before that date.

Although we encourage you to take as much swag as possible before the caches disappear, please do NOT take the cache itself. Cachers are still trying to find our caches and, once we archive them, we're hoping to bring them in ourselves.

The easiest way to access this cache is by walking along the sands of Runswick Bay. The beach is dog friendly and there are no restrictions for them at any time of the year. Please be aware that high tides will make this cache inaccessible along the beach, although there are alternative rights of way to it from inland.

The nearest parking is in a pay and display carpark which is free during the winter period. We have marked this as a waypoint.

If you were to explore futher to the south east from the village of Runswick you would discover the Runswick Yacht club building perched precariously close to the pounding waves. The strong sea defences that they've built testify to the amount of times the sea has encroached into their club.

Also of interest is the "Hob Hole", a large cave inhabited by a Hobgoblin that can cure children of whooping cough. Afflicted children would be carried into the cave and their parents would invoke the spirit of the Hob for its cure and shout “Hob-hole Hob! my bairn’s got kink-cough; take’t off, take’t off.” With the cave being 70 feet long and 20 feet wide, I'd imagine that such cries would make quite an echo.
