Geocache Description:

SLO:

ENG:

CHURCH OF THE SAINT MOHOR - On the steep slope of Sremič, which squeezes the old square of Brestanica from the southeastern side there is the church of Saint Mohor standing at a beautiful vantage point. A beautiful view of Brestanica and the whole basin opens towards the north where the Trappists worked on their fields.

Each church is an architectural memorial and gallery of its time. This one-naved church bears the year 1477, but during the restoration at the end of the 20th century it was discovered that its core dates back in the time of Romanesque time. The church was being in completion several times, the most famous part being the Notburga chapel, where wonderful frescoes have been reserved from the 18th century, On them there are scenes of the story of the pious and goodhearted girl Notburga.

On the slopes of the Mohor hill there used to stand gallows, "gavge", where they hung those sinners who had been convicted to death by the county court in Sevnica. On the hill close to the church they fired against hail into the stormy clouds and ring the church bells, because it used to rain and hailed quite a lot there.

The verger, Miha of Mohor, was in charge of this kind of protection, but was in spite of his endeavour quite often unsuccessful. That is why he used to say while it was sunny in Carniola and it hailed at Mohor, "Saint Mohor and Fortunat, hail a little over Carniola, too.
