Geocache Description:

With number 58 along this trail, it's time to tell a bit of the story of the Kings Bay Submarine Base.  You have been holding your breath since Kings Bay Trail #1 for this information, and apologies to you for holding out on you for so long--and for breaking this up into several short segments to keep your interest.  Installment number 1:  The Kings Bay Submarine Base contains about 16,000 acres of land, about one-fourth of which is wetlands. About 7,000 acres of this property were acquired by the Army in 1954 for the storage and shipment of ammunition, and large V-shaped bunkers were build for the storage of ammunition and protection of other areas in cases of unplanned explosions.  The dredging that took place, as well as the bunkers and nearly 50 miles of railroad tracks that were installed, were never needed by the Army, and the huge concrete and steel wharf and surrounding land were leased in 1959 to Blue Star Shipping Company, which used it the area for many years for shipments in and out of the area, always by smaller ocean-going ships.

Permission has been granted by the proper authorities for the placement of these caches.  Be careful and pull well off the pavement.    BYOP.

Look for a small paint-camoed former condiment container.
