This cache is placed at Maquoketa Caves State Park. Maquoketa Caves is the most unique state park in Iowa because it has 16 different caves that you can walk through or crawl through. This cache is located near the Visitor Center which has information about the park as well as artifacts found by Paul Sagers, who you can learn about if you stop in. The Center is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day every year on Saturdays and Sundays from 9-5. Maquoketa Caves is open year-round to hike the trails but if you want to explore the caves you have to come Memorial Day to labor Day, as the caves are closed in the winter due to bat hibernation. This was placed on January 1st 2019 in the spirit of the first day hike. It means to get outside and enjoy nature. State Parks across the country hold a hike every year on the first day. The hike at Maquoketa Caves is always very popular. The hours of the State Park is 4:30am until 10:30pm year-round. Respect these times. This cache was placed with permission by the Iowa DNR.
