Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache located in Lees Ferry, AZ (the popular river-rafting launch). The hiking trail is over a mile round trip, it offers spectacular views, and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Colorado River. The coordinates for this cache are for a wooden post that marks these ruins. You must search for the correct structure (see picture). Elevation is approximately 3138 feet.

To receive credit for this cache you need to:

  1. Visit the cache site on or after 8/13/02, the date this virtual cache was established.
  2. Go on a short hike, enjoy the view, and locate the CORRECT structure at the cache site.
  3. Provide proof of your find:
    • Take a picture of yourself and your GPSR, and upload the picture when you log your find. Make sure you find the CORRECT structure and include the background in your picture (just as I have). Please do not include the alternative in your picture.
    • Alternative: Send me an e-mail with a detailed description of what lies 20 feet to my right. Please do NOT post your answer when you log the cache (even if encrypted), nor post a picture of that area.

As with most virtual caches, it is not the destination that is important, it is the journey. Have a safe and memorable journey.

NOTE
This is a historical site, so please do not move or remove any objects. The views around this area are spectacular during sunrise and sunset.

HISTORY
Excerpts taken from NPS and AmericanSouthwest.net.

Lees Ferry is a tiny settlement next to the Colorado River, at the end of a side road 6 miles from ALT US 89. The village was named after John D. Lee, a Mormon settler with 17 wives who established a ferry there in 1871 whilst in exile following his role in the massacre of 70 emigrants near St. George, Utah.

The ferry provided the only crossing of the river for nearly 60 years until a bridge was built a few miles downstream, where the present day route 89 crosses now.

A "Walking Tour Guide" of Lees Ferry and Lonely Dell Ranch Historic Districts may be purchased for $1.00 from self-service stands located at either the Lees Ferry or Lonely Dell Historic Districts.

BACKGROUND
My wife, MayMay, and I went on a road trip to the Grand Canyon, both the North and South Rims, in August of 2002. On our way to the South Rim, we experienced a breathtaking sunset in the Vermilion Cliffs, and we decided to stay an extra day to explore Lees Ferry. On our way back, we watched the sunset on the Colorado River at Lees Ferry. The next morning, MayMay and I hiked the One Mile River Trail for a couple of hours. On our hike, we saw many of the ruins and the splendor of the Colorado River. Since there were no other Geocaches in the area, I thought I would make this into a virtual cache site. I recommend visiting this area around sunset or sunrise due to the spectacular colors of the sandstone cliffs. Enjoy.
