Everyone knows that Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the American continents was a mistake. He was trying to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. But how could any navigator make such a huge error? Columbus estimated the distance to the Indies at approximately 2,500 miles, which is 7,500 miles short. It could have been error, but it was probably also partly because of wishful thinking. But after a voyage of about five weeks, he and his crews, totaling 90 men, did find land at around 2 a.m. on October 12, 1492. When he died in 1506, he was largely considered a failure. But even if Columbus was unaware that he never reached the Orient, he knew he had not failed.
“By the divine will,” he said shortly before his death, “I have placed under the sovereignty of the king and queen an ‘other world,’ whereby Spain, which was considered poor, is to become the richest of all countries.”
